From Rescue to Routine. Even Heroes Need Rest
I didn’t plan to foster a dog.
But then came Benson—rescued from animal control in an emergency placement.
He needed a soft place to land. Not forever. Just for now.
The first thing he did was take a giant dump on my living room rug.
Then he peed on the couch.
Then stress peed on my clean bed linens.
Then chased a cat and disappeared for 10 terrifying minutes.
Every day: some form of chaos.
And I thought, What have I gotten myself into?
But then…
On day three, he played with Oakley.
He started cuddling at night like a soft, snoring teddy bear.
He learned “stay.” And “out of the kitchen.”
He began to trust.
And I realized—I wasn’t just fostering a dog.
I was holding space for someone in transition.
Offering safety. Routine. A breath.
And that’s what I do for the leaders I coach, too.
So many of you are out there trying to hold it all:
⚡️ Growing funding pressure
💔 Personal grief you don’t have time to feel
🌊 Relentless demands on your energy, your vision, your heart
No one trained you to lead through this.
And you don’t have to do it alone.
If you’re ready for a pause, a plan, and someone to walk with you through the mess, I’ve opened a few free consult spots this month.
You can book one here: Talk Story
Or if you want to take a powerful step on your own right now,
Download my Fundraising Hero’s Journey.
It’s a beautiful, practical way to reconnect with what’s working (and what’s next)
You’re doing sacred work.
And even heroes need rest.
